FAQ

Who is eligible to apply?

Students attending our partner schools in East Harlem are are eligible to apply. Partner schools include PS198, PS206, Mount Carmel Holy Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady Queen of Angels. Each year we admit 15 rising first graders. Admission to other grades may be offered based on availability. Placement is determined by a waitlist system as vacancies arise prefrence given to siblings and students from our partner schools. While we do accept students of all ability levels; we will prioritize students in need of academic support.  2/3 of boys are performing below grade level when they first arrive at the program. Horizons serves families who are eligible for free and/or reduced price lunch; proof of income is a requirement in the admission process. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, we are not able to serve children with significant learning or behavioral issues.

How do I apply for my child?

The admission cycle begins in January and runs through March. The application can only be completed online and must be submitted by the deadline. Please note: submitting an application does not mean your child is automatically in the program. We will notify you of acceptance, decline, or waitlist status by letter in April.

How are admission decisions reached?

Students with completed applications will be invited to our admissions day in March. This is an opportunity for parents to learn more about Horizons and to ask any questions. All applicants receive careful consideration.

When will I know if my child has been accepted?

Final decisions are released in April. We do not have rolling admissions. Families are strongly encouraged to have back-up opportunities lined up for their son(s) as Horizons at Saint David's receives more applications than spaces available.

How much does the program cost?

Horizons is a scholarship program. Families pay a $50 registration fee. Parents pay this fee only after their child is accepted into the program. This fee re-occurs each year of re-enrollment.

What are the dates and hours of the Horizons summer session?

The program runs for six weeks, Monday through Friday, from the first week of July through the second week of August. Program hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Where is the program held?

The program is held at Saint David’s School, 12 East 89th Street, between Madison and Fifth Avenues. Transportation is not provided. Student metro cards are provided.

Do you provide meals?

Yes. We provide a nutritious lunch and snacks daily.

What is the attendance policy?

We have a very strict attendance policy. Students are expected to attend every day for the full six weeks, as well as attend any events that take place during the school year. We also expect families to adhere to our 8:30 drop off and 3:00 pick up.  If you have summer plans that would prevent your child from attending all six weeks of the program, and you are not willing to change your plans, you should not apply. Poor attendance will jeopardize your son’s place in the program for future summers.
